Son of John Lockhart (c1808-c1849) and Joan Proctor (c1808-1839). They married in Edinburgh at Saint Cuthbert's Church on 8 Jun 1830. William was baptized in the same church.

John, Joan, and their two sons, William and John, arrived in New York 24 Jun 1834 aboard the Susannah out of Greenock, Scotland. One more child, Annie, was born in New York around 1837. Both John Sr and Joan appear to have died in Manhattan.

William was a silversmith. On the 1850 Census, he is living in Manhattan at the home of William Forbes, a silversmith. On the 1880 Census, he lived in Philadelphia with his wife, Jane B. Lockhart (1830-1898) and his widowed sister, Annie Johnson, both of whom are also buried in this plot.

Jane died in Alexandria, VA at the home of James Adams on South Lee St. William's brother, John, is listed on Jane's funeral bill.

William was originally buried in Machpelah Cemetery (as stated on his death return) and was reburied in Mt Moriah on 9 Oct 1883. The burial register listing for Mt Moriah says 'Lockhart - rem from Machpelah Vt'.

NOTE: William's brother, John Lockhart, who was also a silversmith, is buried nearby in Sec 201, Lot 31. Their sister, Annie Johnson, is buried in William's plot.
