William "Willy" James Richardson, 74, a longtime resident of Hayfield, MN, passed away at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Mary's Campus in Rochester, MN surround by his family.

Willy was born August 8, 1942, on the farm in Riceville, IA to Charles and Cecelia (O'Brien) Richardson. He attended Riceville High School.

In 1962, Willy met the love of his life, Susan Nelson on a blind date. Susan at the time was attending the Villa Maria in Frontenac, MN. The nuns at the Villa soon fell in love with Willy and his numerous pranks. On June 25, 1966, Willy and Sue were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hayfield, MN. Following their marriage, they moved to Waterloo, IA where their son, James (Jim) was born. In 1971, the Richardson family moved to Hayfield, MN where they are current residents. He later retired from Hormel in Austin, MN. Willy was a past Hayfield Police Officer, Assistant Fire Chief, Snowmobile Instructor and Racer.

Willy is well known for his wonderful smile, sense of humor and storytelling. He was a true sports fan. Racing was part of his soul, having raced at a young age and being at the races till his last day. Neighbors and friends knew Willy was always tinkering in his shop and ready to fix anything that needed repair. Willy was also an avid wrestling fan. Not only did he follow his son and grandson, Wyatt, he would also be seen in the stands supporting local athletes. Willy also loved traveling the Mississippi in his boat the “Foxy Lady” and teaching people to ski. Willy had a true love of reading and history. This was evident when his granddaughter, Sydney became a Marine. He could recite anything you needed to know about the Marines.

Willy is survived by his wife, Susan Richardson, Hayfield, MN; son, James (Darcy) Richardson, Grand Meadow, MN; two grandchildren, Sydney Richardson, San Diego, CA and Wyatt Richardson, Grand Meadow; sister, Irene Anderlik, Riceville, IA and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Cecelia, his brother, Leland and sister, Deloris.

Visitation will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2016, with a prayer service to follow, and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

The funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2016, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 ~ 2nd Street NE in Hayfield, MN with Father Thomas Niehaus celebrating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Hayfield, MN following mass.
To honor Willy, please dress in your favorite sport attire; NASCAR, GMLOKS Bulldog, Super Lark, Hawkeye, etc. Willy would always use his favorite phrase when he saw you, "Hey by the way, glad you got to see me."
