Archibald McIntyre was born 15 July 1804 in Kilmonivaig near Spean Bridge in what is now Inverness-shire in Scotland. He was the sixth of 12 children, and the third son of Duncan and Catherine (Kennedy) McIntyre. According to the biography of Archibald's brother Rev William McIntyre, their father was a farmer who ensured that his children had a classical education, learning Greek and Latin. Their native language was of course Gaelic.
In 1828 Archibald married Jessie Dewar Halling in Kilmonivaig and they had 8 children: Duncan McIntyre, Elizabeth Campbell McIntyre (died at the age of 3), Flora Mary McIntyre, Katherine Amelia Campbell (McIntyre) Bridge, John Archibald McIntyre, Eglantine Jane Upton Balfour McDougall (McIntyre) McGregor, William McKinnon McIntyre and Mary Georgina (McIntyre) Campbell.
Archibald, Jessie and children migrated to Australia in 1854 and soon settled in the Upper Hunter valley in the area of Brushy Hill. Their property on the Rouchel, named 'Bethel' was close to both Scone and Aberdeen and near Peter McIntyre's 'Blairmore' and Donald McIntyre's 'Kayuga'.
