ABEL CLARKE DIES
AT ROXBURY HOME
OF COMPLICATIONS

Rites for Cambria Steel
Pensioner Will Be
Held Saturday

Abel Clarke, 77-year old pensioner of the Cambria Steel Plant, died at 4:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home, 141 Hammer Avenue. He had been bedfast the past four months, suffering from complications incident to advanced age.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Clarke home by Rev. Dr. W. K. Anderson, pastor of the Franklin Street Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Dr. Clifford A. Owens, pastor of Memorial Baptist Church.

Burial will take place in Grandview Cemetery, under direction of the Gocher Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Henry Ferg, John Beatty, John Mintntier, Ross Galda, Richard Catherwood and Charles Shaner.

Mr. Clarke was born in Staffordshire, England, May 19, 1861, a son of John and Mary (Carter) Clarke. Immigrating to this country in 1898, he located in Tioga County residing there 10 years. In 1908, the Clarke family moved to Johnstown and Abel Clarke entered the employ of the old Cambria Iron Company. He remained with the steel concern and its successors for a period of 30 years, retiring on pension six years ago.

During his residence here, the well-known Roxbury man was actively affiliated with the Franklin Street Methodist Church and for some years taught a boys Sunday school class. He was a member of Mahoning Lodge No. 361, Knights of Pythias, of Punxsutawney.

Mr. Clarke is survived by his widow, the former Millicent Carlin, and these children: Joseph and John Clarke, both of Buffalo, N. Y.; Sarah, wife of Thomas Gardner, Canton, Pa.; Mary, wife of Ben Phillips, Marion Place; Millicent, wife of J. Fred Gist, 141 Hammer Avenue; and Seth Clarke, 191 Hammer Avenue.

The deceased also leaves a brother, Seth Clarke, sr., of DuBois, and two half-brothers – James Burton, Corning, N. Y., and Charles Burton, Draper, Pa. Clarke was preceded in death by a son, Abel, a World War veteran, who died 15 years ago.
