Robert was the son of Matthew Lakes, born 1828, and his first wife Jane, nee Fussey, 1833 - 1853, who married on 2nd August 1849, at Paull, East Yorkshire.
Matthew remarried in 1855, shortly after Jane's death. Matthew and his second wife Harriet Ann, nee Hall, and their children emigrated to Argentina
