Edward E. Harrington, 85, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 20, 2016) at the Sena Kean Manor following a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 16, 1931, in Towanda, he was a son of Francis and Genny Barth Harrington. On June 6, 1959, in the Mildred Lutheran Church, he married Lorraine Coleman, who survives.
He was a 1950 graduate of Dushore High School, Sullivan County. In 1959 he received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mansfield State College. In 1962 he received a Master's Degree in Education from St. Bonaventure University, he had also accomplished post-Masters Degree graduate work at St. Bonaventure and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. He had resided in Eldred since 1959.
Mr. Harrington was a veteran of the Korean War from 1950 to 1954 having served with U.S. Navy as an Aviation Store Keeper 3rd Class in charge of supplies for Fighter Squadron No. 13, attached to the Carrier Airgroup No. 1, based in Jacksonville, Fla. And he had served in the Arctic and Mediterranean. From 1959 to 1967 he was employed as a school teacher and later principal at the Eldred Elementary School. From 1967 until his retirement in 1987, he was superintendent of the Otto-Eldred School District.
He was member of the Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church for over 50 years, where he held several offices. He was a member and past master of the Eldred Masonic Lodge #560, which later merged with the Northern Star Lodge #555 F & AM of Duke Center. He was a member of the Coudersport Consistory. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators, and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. He was a life member of the Eldred Senior Center, where he delivered meals on wheels. He was a life member of the Eldred American Legion Post 887, and the Eldred Boro Fire Department. He was past president of the Eldred Borough Sewage Authority, past president of the Eldred Borough Council, and he was on the board of the Kane Lutheran Home.
Ed and Lorraine were always very appreciative of how the Otto-Eldred Community received them and honored them, after they moved here. He was an avid reader, past Little League umpire and manager. He enjoyed trout fishing with his grandchildren and fishing trips to lakes in Canada.
In addition to his wife of Sena Kean Manor, he is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Joseph) Bova of Spokane, Wash.; three grandchildren, Rebecca Bova, Michael (Tanna) Bova, and Christopher Bova; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Bova and Taylynn Bova. He is also survived by his adopted family, Hector and Mary Wheeler of Eldred, and their children Russell Wheeler and Katie Wheeler.
He was predeceased two daughters, Mary Beth Harrington and Jennifer Lynn Harrington, both in 1981; and a brother, Robert Harrington.
