As told to me by my Grandfather, when Elisha Hall was released from a prison in Maryland, after the Civil War, he was a very sick man and was severely frostbitten on numerous extremities. He was to walk home to North Florida. He came across an Indian tribe who nursed him back to "health" and sent a maiden "Mattie" the rest of the way with him to assure his safe arrival. They married and had children. Mattie never learned to speak English, and the men in the church teased Elisha about being lucky not having a nagging wife. But Elisha assured them that they communicated just fine.
My grandfather remembered her well as he was around 10 when she died. He said she was a very loving and kind person and very nurturing to all of the children. Mattie and Elisha were my paternal Great, Great, Great Grandparents.
