Oscar was my gorgeous turquoise parakeet. He lived far longer than parakeets usually do, even though we never could get him to eat anything but seed--not a balanced diet for him at all.

My mother decided she wanted a parakeet for her birthday, so my sister bought a young parakeet, and I bought the cage and supplies. Mom had many allergies and soon realized that included parakeet feathers. My sister couldn't take Oscar because she had cats, so he came to live with me.

Oscar always got excited and made lots of noise when anyone in the household came home or came in the area of his cage. He like all of us but was never receptive to being handled at all.

Oscar finally died of old age. I had made up my mind years before that day that I never wanted another pet bird kept in a regular cage. I don't think it's fair to keep them in any environment that keeps them from flying freely. If I ever have another pet bird, its cage will have to be the size of a house!
