John Harrington Was Early Elkhorn Settler
The death of John Harrington removed an old settler from the ranks in Webster county, as he was a resident hero for over forty years. He was born in County Cork, Ireland, June 23, 1828, and died recently at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. W. Laird, in Eagle Grove. Mr. Harrington was one of a family of thirteen children and was the last to be claimed by death. There were also eleven half brothers, five of whom are now living. After coming to this country when 23 years of age he settled at Rockford, Ill., where he was married to Hannah O'Neel. Her death occurred 25 years ago. Seven children were born to them and grew to manhood and womanhood, and are as follows. Mrs. W. W. Laird, Eagle Grove; Abbie, Dan and Mrs. P. Joyce, of Waterloo, now deceased, Dennis, of Moorland; Mrs. Geo. Barnett and Mrs. J. W. Dreggs, of California.
In the fall of 1870 Mr. Harrington packed his worldly stores in a wagon and came to this county, settling in Elkhorn township. The following year his property was destroyed by a prairie fire, and he was planning to return to Illinois to get a new start by chopping wood when his neighbors prevailed upon him to remain. They gave him some assistance and after two successive years of crop damage by grasshoppers conditions became better and he became a successful farmer. During the severe blizzards in the early eighties he carried his stock through the winters in good shape, while others lost many. At the age of 75, Mr. Harrington was still in good health and able to do heavy work.
The funeral was held at Eagle Grove and burial was in Corpus Christi cemetery here.
