Max was an adorable little Maltese. He came to my husband and me in 1996 when the couple who had owned him since he was a puppy decided they no longer wanted him. Their intent was to euthanize him; the veterinarian refused and contacted us to see if we would take him.

Max wasn't a very healthy little dog and apparently from chronic pancreatitis. His original owners didn't give him a normal life. We gave him love, and he loved us in return. He got excited every time we came home and in his excitement would shred newspapers with his little front paws. We put the papers on the floor for him just so he could do that.

He had been acting strangely the last week of his life. It wasn't until the day he died that we learned he had a tumor on his heart, it was making him miserable, and it was fatal. I wish he could have been healthier and been with us longer, but at least we gave him two years of living like a normal "baby," with much love and snuggling.
