Dr. Robert A. Mathews, age 91, was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Emily Grantham Mathews. [...]
He was also preceded by parents, Marguerite and Raymond Mathews, and brother, Dr. Kenneth Mathews.
Dr. Mathews was a retired dentist practicing in Nashville from 1950 - 1994. He grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Following his predental education at the University of Michigan, he graduated from Michigan's School of Dentistry. He then served in the US Navy Dental Corps, stationed at Annapolis Naval Academy. Following the Navy he joined the faculty of the Michigan School of Dentistry and later interned at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.
Dr. Mathews was active in the dental profession, serving as president of the Nashville Dental Society, trustee of the Tennessee Dental Association and councilman of the American Dental Association. He was selected Fellow of the American College of Dentist and the International College of Dentist. He was chairman of the Tennessee Section of the American College of Dentistry, a member of the American Academy of Peridontology and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He received the Fellowship Award of the Tennessee Dental Association.
An active member of Woodmont Christian Church, Dr. Mathews served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. A life-long tennis player, he was a member of the University of Michigan tennis team. Also he enjoyed spending time at his home 'Peace and Plenty' at the Monteagle Sunday School Assembly. A former member of the Nashville Exchange Club, Hillwood Country Club, University Club and college fraternity Chi Phi and dental fraternity Delta Sigma Delta.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Monteagle Sunday School Assembly or to Woodmont Christian Church.
Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2014 with visitation prior from 1-3 p.m., at Woodmont Christian Church, 3601 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, TN. Burial to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
