Maitland was born the fifth son of Lt Colonel Abraham Colles Anderson and Anna Maria Honoria Brooke in 1846. Together with his brothers Paris Brooke Anderson and Farquhar Campbell Anderson he migrated to New Zealand.. In 1869 he sailed in the barque Icon, with his brother Paris to New Zealand Maitland and Paris married two sisters, daughters of early settler Richard Robinson. Maitland married Edith Dring Robinson on 4 March 1871 at St. Matthias, and Paris married Alice Annie Robinson.
Maitland and Edith had 5 sons and 7 daughters between 1874 and 1892.
