Abby Fisher was born a slave in South Carolina, where she learned to cook in plantation kitchens. Her father was born in France, her mother in South Carolina. She married Alexander C. Fisher, who was born in Alabama, according to the 1880 census. According to the 1900 census and her cookbook preface, she'd raised eleven children (five of whom were deceased before 1900).

We know that after the Civil War, Abby Fisher moved to Mobile. Three of her children were born in Alabama, the last one in Missouri. In 1877, the Fishers relocated to San Francisco.
