Statesman, 27th President of Brazil. He served from 15 March 1967 to 31 August 1969. Prior to becoming president he was a career army officer attaining the rank of general and Marshal of the Brazilian Army. For a short time he was minister of mines and energy. He then served as minister of war from 4 April 1964 to 30 June 1966. As a hard liner for the military establishment, he was elected by an overwhelming vote by the congress. He is best remembered for fighting against inflation, revising government salaries and expanded foreign trade. He also began a reform of the federal administrative agencies and improved the communication and transportation systems. He also placed Brazil under a tight dictatorship for a short period. He became ill and was removed from office. He soon died of a heart attack.
