Maurice immigrated from Russia in 1912. He was naturalized in 1931 in Chicago.

Maurice Atlas founded stores

Maurice (Max) Atlas, 97, who founded Atlas Supermarkets in Indianapolis, died Monday, April 26.

Mr. Atlas owned and operated Grove Outfitting Co. in Chicago from 1927 to 1939. He founded Atlas Supermarkets at 440-1 E. New York St. in Indianapolis in 1940. In 1950 he opened a second store at 38th and Shadeland, locating in 1955 at 6429 E. Washington St. He then opened stores at 3021 W. Washington St. 54th and College Avenue, and 34th and Fairfield. He sold all his stores to the Stop and Shop Super Markets chain in 1955 and retired. His supermarkets were the first in Indianapolis to have self-serve meats and produce and storewide air conditioning.

He was a member of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck.

Survivors include his wife of 77 years. Rose Dordek Atlas; a son, Arthur I. Atlas, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were Wednesday, April 28 in Beth-El Zedeck Cemetery North, Rabbi Lewis Weiss officiating.

Arrangements were by Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Meridian Hills Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Beth-El Zedeck.
