John Carlin made a wager with his friend, William Gallagher, that he could emulate the stunt performed by Steve Brodie who jumped from the Brooklyn Bridge into the East River. After spending time in a tavern at 24th and Brown Streets, the two men walked to the Spring Garden Street Bridge where John Carlin jumped into the Schuylkill. He did not emerge. His body was found in the mud the next day
