Married first, Julius H. Haas, 22 Jul 1885, in Brooklyn, NY. Emma is listed as Julius' widow in the 1894 Washington, DC city directory. (It is very likely that the two were divorced, rather than Julius having died. There are several census listings of a Julius H. Haas living in New York after this date, with a wife named Fanny whom he married in 1891. Divorcees sometimes listed themselves as widows in this time period due to the social stigma divorce carried.)
Married second, Charles Martel (born Karl David Hanke), American librarian responsible for the creation of the Library of Congress Cataloging System. The wedding was described in the Washington Evening Star, 17 Mar 1900:
"Mr. Charles Martel, assistant chief of the catalogue department of the Congressional Library, and Mrs. Emma J. McCay Haas, a widow of Woodstock, Va., were married in the clerk's office of the court of common pleas in Baltimore yesterday by Rev. William V. Way. In applying for the license, Mr. Martel gave his age as forty years and his present address 713 B street, Washington, D.C. His bride's age is thirty-five years [sic]. The couple returned to this city after the ceremony."
Child:
1. Renaud "Rennie" Tristan, b. 5 Jan 1901, d. 23 Nov 1968. He married Juanita Irene Dement; they were later divorced. They had a daughter, Emma Irene "Tess" Martel Love, and a son. Renaud later married Gladys ______.
