(Biographical sketch by sameelee © 2016)

William Asfordby was born in England in 1638 and baptized 29 March 1638 in Saltfleetby-of Stayne-in-the-Marsh, Lincolnshire, England. His parents were Alice Wolley of Comberworth and John Asfordby of Saltfleetby.

William married in England to Martha Burton of of Burgh-in-the-Marsh, Lincolnshire.

Their first four children were baptized in St. Peter's Church, Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, England; the last four were baptized in Kingston, Ulster County, New York.

Birth dates are unknown but baptisms were customarily done within a few days of birth.

Baptism dates:

1. Martha baptized 18 March 1668
2. Charles baptized 29 October 1668
3. Susanna (1st) baptized 03 November 1669
4. SUSANNA baptized 22 February 1670
5. Eleanor baptized 26 February 1682
6. Anne baptized 02 March 1684
7. Providence baptized 02 March 1684
8. Catherine baptized 09 November 1685

Will of uncle Wm Wolley 15 February 1677. Crall says, "At that date, William Asfordby had been a resident of New York for at least three years."

"The earliest record of William Asfordby's presence in America is his signature on a treaty renewing peace with the indian chiefs at Kingston. His name appears on subsequent peace renewals in 1679 and 1681. And he was one of the petitioners for a minister at Kingston in 1676; the same year he took out a patent for 108 acres of land at Marbletown.

"He was a prominent man in the area, being a Magistrate from 1676-1679, 1681 and 1682, held court as presiding judge on various occasions, was Sheriff of Esopus (Kingston was the center) in 1676 and from 1679-1683. He was temporarily removed under charges of malfeasance, but apparently vindicated himself. In 1683 he was one of 2 elected Assemblymen from Esopus to the first New York Assembly. One of the acts of the Assembly was to form counties from the various districts. Ulster County included Kingston, Marbletown, New Platz and other towns and villages. When Ulster County was founded, he was the first Sheriff of that county.

"William left no written will, but declared it orally on 6 November 1697 to several friends, who testified to it in court such that it was proved 24 February 1698. His wife appears to have kept the estate intact until her death in probably 1711, when the estate was divided among their children. Documents show that the three daughters were the heirs, Elinor wife of Thomas Cock, Catherine Asfordby, and Susan, wife of John Beatty."

It is believed that William Asfordby may be buried in the churchyard of the old Dutch Reformed Church in Kingston where only a limited number of burial records have been found.
