Weezie was a 1998 Christmas present to Thomas 'Tommy' Reed from one of his sons. Tommy had always had dogs but when the dog before Weezie had passed away, Tommy had decided that there would be no more dogs. He just couldn't stand the pain of losing them. "You'd better not get me another dog ", is what he told relatives when they'd suggest he do just that. It was obvious that he was lost and lonely without a dog in his life, so when his son walked in with this tiny dachshund and set her next to Tommy on the sofa, Tommy grumbled until Weezie immediately jumped on his lap and started licking him. Gone! Tommy lost his heart and that was the beginning of a beautiful love story.
Weezie lived in Chalmette, Louisiana with Tommy and was there in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina came through, destroying the levees protecting this town. Please read the memorial of Thomas Reed to see what Weezie and Tommy endured.
Weezie stayed with me and others in North Central Arkansas after she was rescued. I don't know much about dogs. I'm a cat person. She acted like a dog.(probably because she was one) She'd bark in the wee hours, drag her food onto the carpet, and wipe her butt on the carpet. We took her on a fishing boat once. She kept eating the bait, so Tommy had to hold her the whole time so that she wouldn't swallow a hook. She seemed shy to me. She didn't interact with any of the other 5 people, other 2 dogs, the 3 cats, the pet bird, nor the pet rat. (In a 2 bedroom!) She shadowed Tommy. Tommy said that Weezie was usually more outgoing but that she was traumatized from her Hurricane Katrina experience. Probably so. I detected a sadness in her eyes that even Tommy couldn't erase. I can only guess at what the poor thing may have seen and the experiences of flooding, starving, and a helicopter ride must have been terrifying. You are safe now Weezie, with your 'daddy' for all eternity. RIP
