Artist and naturalist. Catesby was infatuated with nature and planned a visit to America to index the wild life. He left England in February of 1722 and arrived in South Carolina three months later. It was his intention to document as many species that could be found in Carolina's natural habitat. Rather than only remaining a short time the visit lasted more than four years with the ultimate publication of the still acclaimed "Natural History of Carolina, Florida and The Bahama Islands." The book was published in eleven sections and depicted more than two hundred twenty hand colored plates.
