Private First Class Bentford Bennett was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, PFC Bennett served our country until June 23rd, 1966 in South Vietnam. He was 22 years old and was not married. It was reported that Bentford died from a Viet Cong grenade. His body was recovered. PFC Bennett is on panel 08E, line 081 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year. He was one of three vets that were killed in Vietnam that were natives of the small town of Lilesville.
On January 8, 1944, A Son was born to Raymond and Elsie Bennett. This child they named Bentford. As he grew up into manhood, he realized out of a mind of his own that God comes first, so he confessed Religion at the Henry Grove Baptist Church in July of 1968. A very respectable young man. PFC Bennett was a member of the First Cavalry Division of the US Army. He had been in service a little over a year, doing his basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, and having been in Vietnam since August. This is where the ill fate came., on Thursday, June 23, 1966, where he was killed by a Viet Cong hand grenade. He was a graduate of Henry Grove High School and leaves to mourn; his parents, Mr Raymond Bennett and Mrs Elsie Bennett. One sister, Mrs Gladys Bennett McLendon of Lilesville, NC, Three Brothers, John Walton Bennett and Raymond Bennett Jr, of the home and Calvin Bennett of Wadesboro, NC. A Grandmother, Mrs Bertha Liles, a Grandfather, Mr Roger Liles. One Brother-On-Law. one Sister-In-Law, Two Aunts, Mrs Tressie Simon of Baltimore, Md, and Mrs Minnie Lee Byrd of Bridgeton, New Jersey. eight Uncles; Mr Charlie, Willie and Tyler Liles, all of Baltimore, MC. Mr Walter Lee Loles of Forest Hill, New Jersey, Mr John Mark, Cleveland and Paul Liles, al lof Lilesville, NC, and Mr Purdie Bennett of Lilesville, NC, and many other relatives and friends.
