Son of James and Agnes Dandridge Ruffin, James Francis was trained to be a lawyer. He married Eliza Wood of Virginia in 1836. He and his wife became parents to four children: Valeriius, Thomas, Rowena, and Agnes. James Eventually contracted tuberculosis and his health became delicate. He returned to his law practice after taking time to recouperate on the island of Cuba, but his health continued to deteriorate and he passed away.
