Daughter of James and Agnes Dandridge Ruffin originally from King William County, Virginia, Cornelia was born in Hardeman County, Tennessee after her father relocated to that place by about 1825. Her mother died in 1839 and her father remarried Margaret Oliver in DeSoto County, Mississippi about 1840. Her father died in 1847 at DeSoto County, Mississippi, followed very shortly thereafter by her step-mother. Cornelia and her sister Ellen were enrolled at the Nazareth Female Institute in Nelson County, Kentucky, a well known finishing school, where they were enumerated on the 1850 Census. She met Robert Adams Johnson from Louisville and they were married in New York City at the Metropolitan Hotel in 1853. They had three children, Julia (b. 1855 - died as an infant), Margaret "Maggie" J., born 1857 and Robert A. Johnson, Jr. born in 1859 at New Orleans, Louisiana. Following her death, which may have been in New Orleans, Robert remarried twice and had other children, but he was buried near her following his death in 1886.
