Swedish politician and regent. Also called Tyrgils and Torgils. He was King Magnus III's Marshal of the Realm and after that king's death ruled Sweden 1290-1298 during the minority of King Birger. He led a crusade to Carelia and founded Viborg (now in Russia) in 1293 where a statue represents him today. He had his daughter Christina married to King Birger's brother Prince Waldemar, Duke of Finland. He supported Birger against his two brothers during their dramatic and lethal conflict, but soon all three turned on him, and he was arrested in 1305 and beheaded the following year. Duke Waldemar had then already divorced his daughter. A well-known street in Sweden's capital of Stockholm is named for him.
