Joseph Bryan was born around the Ohio River border region between Ohio and Pennsylvania in 1812. Some sources say that Joseph was orphaned and he was raised by Alexander and Susannah Young of Columbiana County, Ohio. This may explain why Joseph's first-born son was named Alexander Young Bryan, in honor of his adopted father. Alexander Young also gave Joseph Bryan $1000 to buy his farm in Greene Township, Beaver County near Georgetown, Pennsylvania, where three states join together, (Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia). According to his grandchildren, He had very dark complexion. He always carried gold pieces in his pocket. He was a farmer and raised cattle.

Periodically he would put cattle on a barge at Georgetown and take them up the Ohio River to Pittsburgh where he would sell them. He always came back with a jug of whisky, unfortunately he was also an alcoholic. When Joseph was drunk, his wife and children would hide in haystacks to get away from him. One granddaughter described him as "fiery" and said that her mother would not take her into the Bryan home while Joseph was alive. His wife Elizabeth (Jewell) Bryan was more refined.

Joseph had a stroke a few years before his death which left him with paralysis. He died in 1898 and was buried at Georgetown Cemetery in Georgetown, Pennsylvania.
