ORIGINAL NAME: Stefan av Alvastra.

Swedish clergy. With the Latin name of Stephanus he was a Cistercian monk who became Archbishop of Upsala 1164 until his death. He had been among the first monks at Alvastra Abbey when it opened. He was Sweden's first archbishop and worked out of what today is Old Upsala. Like many monks in Sweden then, and because of his unusual name, he has been assumed to have originally come from Germany or England. He travelled to Sens, France, and there met with Pope Alexander III, who was in exile from a turbulent Rome. Because of secular trouble a decision to create an archbishop of Sweden had been postponed for ten years, but now the Pope decreed that appointment. The Archbishop of Lund was authorized to ordain an Archbishop of Upsala and Stephen was thus ordained. Notes from the planning done at Sens can be found in the National Library of Sweden. He was ordained there in the presence of Alexander, and King Carl I Sweden approved the appointment. A gold medal in his name began to be given out in 1990 for special service to the Church of Sweden.
