Walter F. Austin age 82, of Campbell, NY passed away on January 10, 2007 at Corning Hospital.

He was born on June 9, 1924 to Floyd and Ida (Havens) Austin, Sr. He graduated from Campbell High School in 1943. He married Carol Brew on Valentines Day in 1948. Walter served in the US Army during World War II mostly in Germany. After the service, he worked at Ingersoll Rand, Town of Campbell, and retired as Superintendent of Public Works for the Village of Painted Post. The Village accomplishment he was most proud of was the water plant, which opened in 1973. His most difficult time was during the flood of 1972. He was a charter and life member of the Robert N. Austin American Legion Post 1279. The Post was named after his brother who was a bombardier and was killed in World War II. Walter was active in the Post for several years. He along with Legion Members Ernest Gauss, Larry Vetter, Carl Jackson came up with enough money to make a down payment on property where the present legion building now stands. He was also a life member of the VFW in Bath, NY. Walter was a member of the Campbell United Methodist church. His favorite pastime was spending time at his seasonal home, the pond, on King Hill road in Campbell with his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight years: Carol; daughter: Janice (Joseph) Conaway; son: James (Linda) Austin; grandchildren: Todd (Tessa) Conaway and children Brie, Austin, and Sean of Middlesex, NY; Julie (Kevin) Knaak and children Kody, Keegan, and Kaleb of Winter Haven, FL; James Jr. (Jessica) of Corning, NY; Brothers: Harold (Ellie) Austin of Campbell, NY, Warren (Liz) Austin of Sidney, NY, Floyd Jr. of Elmira, NY, David (Dorothy) of Campbell, Douglas (Nora) of Campbell, William (Josephine) of Campbell; Sister: Anna M. Sherwood of Campbell; Brother- in- law: Kenneth Brew of Corning; Sister-in-law: Janice Brew of Watkins Glen. Walter was predeceased by his parents: Floyd and Ida (Havens) Austin; Sisters: Marion Stedge Brown and Laura Warn.

Calling hours will be today, Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney Street in Corning where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Campbell, NY.
