Nellie Mix, 87, of Deadwood, passed away on Friday, December 16, 2016, at the Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Facility.
Nellie Berneice Mix was born in Terraville, SD in 1929, and was the 6th of 11 children born to Robert Mix Sr. and Ella (Harper) Mix. She attended Deadwood, Terraville and Lead schools graduating from Lead High School in 1948. Nellie worked at the Franklin Grill for three years before enlisting in the Women’s Army Corp, in March 1951. A neighbor girl and Nellie enlisted together and were the first enlisted women to go from this area.
She took basic training at Fort Lee, VA after graduation, went on to Leader’s Course also at Fort Lee. From Leader’s Course, Nellie was assigned to Fort Riley, KS to attend 405 School. After 405 School, she was permanently assigned to Fitzsimons, Army Hospital in Denver, CO. She was the company clerk in the WAC Detachment until being Honorably Discharged in March 1954.
While in basic training, she was the first WAC to carry the flag off the field where the flags of the United Nations were flown. Nellie was the only WAC still in civilian clothes. She wore the raincoat and hat of her Commanding officer (without bars).
After her discharge from active duty, she spent a few days at home with her family, and then went on to Cleveland, OH. Nellie worked at the Cleveland State Hospital for 30 years as an Occupational Therapy Aide. She also enlisted in the Army Reserve and was assigned to the 2077th USAR School as Operations Sgt. At one time in her Reserve Career, she was assigned to an Engineer Unit. Nellie went into the Standby Reserves in 1973, retiring in 1982 with the rank of SFC. She retired from the State of Ohio in 1981, and returned home to Terraville but due to the expansion of the Homestake Gold Mine, had to find a new home. Deadwood would become her choice.
Nellie was very proud to have served her country and was just as proud that seven out of eleven siblings served. Nellie was a member of American Legion Post 22 in Rapid City, the Retired Enlisted Association, and Chapter 29, of Rapid City, VFW Post 5969, Auxiliary, Deadwood and the Women in Military Service for America, Washington, DC.

She is survived by Robert Mix Jr. (USAF veteran), Houston, TX, Lorna Mix (USArmy retiree), Boulder Canyon and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be at 1:30 PM on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Black Hills National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to benefit the American Legion Riders Black Hills Chapter.
