He was the son of black Revolutionary War soldier Luther Jotham.

He married Mary (Cole) McIntyre, a white woman. They settled in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

They had the following children:
Francis Jotham, b. 1863, d. 1863.
Emma Jotham, b. 1865, d. 1865.
Alfred Calvin Jotham, b. 1866, d. 1961.
George Jotham, b. 1880, d. 1880.

He was buried by the Sherbrooke Methodist Church (present-day St. Patrick's Catholic Church) in Union Cemetery. In 1918, the bodies buried at Union Cemetery were removed and re-interred at Elmwood Cemetery.
