The first bishop of São Paulo, Msgr. Bernardo Rodrigues Nogueira was born in Santa Marinha , Seia, Portugal, and was ordained priest on July 5, 1722. Graduating from the University of Coimbra, he hold various offices in his native country, before being appointed to the see of São Paulo on April 22, 1745, receiving his episcopal consecration at the Patriarchal Cathedral of Lisbon on March 13 of the following year. Initiating the organization of the bishopric while still in Portugal, entering solemnly in the cathedral of his see on December 8, 1746, finding an almost ruined temple, he undertook great efforts for its restoration. A school carries his name in the Vila Matilde district of São Paulo.
