Jayne (Phelps) Schalk, of Wellington, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2016 surrounded by her family at Brookdale Assisted Living of Wellington at the age of 92.
Jayne was born the daughter of Otto and Althea (Schmidt) Samuelson on Monday, May 12, 1924 in Topeka, Kansas.
On April 4, 1948, Jayne and Howard Phelps were united in marriage in Topeka, Kansas. Together they celebrated 42 years of marriage before his passing in January of 1991. Jayne married Raymond Schalk on May 6, 2001 in Wellington, Kansas. They were blessed with 15 years of marriage.
As a young woman, Jayne attended Clark's Secretarial School in Topeka, Kansas and began her administrative career soon after. Jayne worked in many offices over the years and retired from Plessey Midwest. Jayne was an active member of First United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years and especially enjoyed her time in the Ruth Circle group and the Searchers Sunday School Class. She was a proud member of the Wellington Lions Club.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Schalk of Wellington, Kansas, sons: Dennis Phelps (Deborah) of Wichita, Kansas, Randy Phelps (Judy) of Wichita, Kansas and Rick Phelps (Lori) of Wellington, Kansas; son-in-law, John Castillo; brother, Armin Samuelson (Ellen) of Hesston, Kansas, 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren along with Raymond's children: Lisa Frazier and Larry Schalk both of Wellington, Kansas and Raymond's 3 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Phelps and their daughter, Julie Castillo.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 22, 2016 with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services for Jayne will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 23, 2016 in the First United Methodist Church, Wellington, Kansas. Interment will follow at Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Wellington, Kansas.
