CUMBERLAND — Linda A. Golden, 63, of Cumberland, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cumberland on Aug. 24, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Harvey R. Golden and Gracine (Schade) Golden, with whom she resided.
She was also preceded in death by a brother Ronnie H. Golden; aunts and uncles, Jack and Ester Golden, Ross and Audrath Golden, Fred and Annalea Roberts, Robert McKnight, Jean and William Zapf, Pearl and Tom Shipley, Pauline Schade Perkins, Robert Schade, and William Brooks.
A local lawyer, Linda was a 1965 graduate of Fort Hill High School, and she graduated from Frostburg State University in 1969 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in English and Education. After graduation, Linda was an English teacher at Washington Junior High School and Fort Hill High School. While at Fort Hill, she was the Chair of the Drama and Speech Departments. Linda recieved her Master of Education Degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1973. She graduated from the University of Maryland Law School, and she served two terms as Allegany County Commissioner. A member of the Allegany County Bar Association, Linda was a former president of the Allegany County Library Board of Trustees. While serving in that capacity, the Frostburg and Georges' Creek Libraries were built.
She practiced law with the law firm of Peter Angelos, and then became and Administrative Law Judge with the State of Maryland. Following her retirement, she continued conducting legal hearings for the State of Maryland.
Linda was involved with many civic organizations. She was instrumental in establishing the Women's Refuge Center in Cumberland. She was a member of the Western Potomac Chapter of the American Red Cross where she was a former board member. Linda was a member of the Democratic party, and she served on many campaign committees and both at the locally and the state level. She supported many causes such as the Salvation Army, local unions, Allegany College of Maryland, and the Cumberland Theatre.
An animal lover, Linda was a member and former chair of the Animal Shelter Management Foundation, the Extension Service and volunteered for the Animal Welfare Board, and the Safe Shelter.
In addition to her mother, Linda is survived by her brother, Jeffrey R. Golden and wife Trisha of Houston, Texas; numerous aunts and uncles, Richard and Rosie Shade, Bedford Pa., Wilda Shade Brooks, Glen Burnie, Noni Golden McKnight, Chattanooga Tenn., Florence Neeley Shade and Jack Perkins, both of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jack George officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
Pallbearers will be Olin Perkins, Bill Zapf, Larry Sicken, Jim Combs, Barry Levine, Mike Noonan, and Ed Zook.
