Abraham is the son of Melia Chamblee and unknown father. His mother was mentally ill and in 1910 was hospitalized at the asylum in Goldsboro while Abraham resided with his maternal grandparents. By 1920 he would be a student at the state School for the Blind and Deaf in Raleigh. His mother by then had been recommitted to the asylum and she would remain there until her death in 1944.
Abraham was admitted to the Hertford County Home in August of 1936 and would commit suicide about two years later by jumping into the well.
