He married Mary Evelyn Wood, the daughter of Abraham & Lydia (nee Wood) Wood, on February 14, 1887 in Redkey, Indiana. They were the parents of Ella, Fay Board, Roy Arthur, Merle Lydia, Ralph, Mae and Vella Stoner. Mr. Stoner supported his large family by farming his own land. He passed away from the effects of cardio-renal vascular disease.

James P. Stoner, 85, died at 2 o'clock yesterday morning at the family home, one mile east of Albany. He was a life-long resident of the community.
Surviving are four sons, Walter and Ralph, of Muncie; Mort, of Terre Haute, and Roy, of Albany; three daughters, Mrs. Merl [sic Merle] Clark, Mrs. May [sic Mae] Rosinki and Mrs. Della Brenner [sic Vella], all of Muncie and twenty-three grandchildren.
The body was taken to the Garland and Stephens funeral home, in Albany, where friends may call after 10 o'clock this morning. Services will be held at the funeral home at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, with the Rev. J.H. Palmer in charge. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
