Mort was born as Oscar Morton Stoner, to parents James P. & Eliza J. Lamb Stoner. He preferred the use of the name Mort and even the registrars at the Draft Board and the Social Security Administration accepted it as his given name.

He married Lou Emma (nee Brown) Pierce on May 8, 1916 in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was the daughter of Lewis R. & Hannah Smith Brown, the former wife of Charles Ross Pierce and the mother of May Pierce.

The couple settled in Terre Haute, where Mort worked as a mail clerk for the Pennyslvania Railroad, at the Union Station in Terre Haute. Lou Emma & Mort divorced, after 1940, and she had her former married name restored. They remarried in May of 1956.

Note: With the exception of the obituary and the thank you note, I have never seen the Ross name associated with Mr. Stoner. Ross was the middle name of Lou Emma Brown Stoner's first husband and somehow that name became part of Mort Stoner's obituary and thank you note.
Note: At the time of his passing, Mr. Stoner still had a brother and several half-siblings still living, but none were mentioned in his obituary. Mysteriously, his brother Walter Stoner's 1964 obituary mentioned Mort Stoner as a survivor.
