John was the son of John Costin of Ireland and immigrated about 1859. He was a miner in an iron mine. John married Julia Cavanaugh about 1877, and they had Julia(1879), Bridget (1881), Nellie (1883), Walter (1887) an adopted son, Helen (1887) and a step-son, Patrick Haggerty (1871) and a step-daughter, Nora Haggerty (1877). John died of heart disease.
