Barstow, Chevalier, Hetzer, Reed Pioneer Families of WASHINGTON, ATHENS, MEIGS COUNTIES OHIO, by Barbara Schwarz-Sprik, 532 North Main Street, Wayland, Michigan 49348, Self Published 1984, page 83

"According to Beth Sanborn, who is also a Reed descendent, Samuel Reed died in Jan of 1815, aged 50. In 1971 Beth was 85 years old and she seemed to be knowledgeable concerning Samuel Reed.

She states that Samuel and Mary Reed are buried in the Reedsville Cemetery. This is very likely true as south of Major Reed's marker is space enough for at least two graves. She states that it was written on the tombstone, "Jan 1815, aged 50 years Let me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like his." Mary ( ) Reed 30 Oct 1821, aged 53 years. This would say that Samuel was born in 1765 and Mary was born in 1768.

Major Reed the first known child was born in 1789. This would make Mary 21 and Samuel 24 when Major was born.

SAMUEL & MARY REED ORIGIN AND MIGRATION TO MEIGS COUNTY, OHIO
Ibid, page 83

"In the Year 1810 we find Samuel and Mary Reed living in or near the town of Caledonia, County of Genesee, New York, for we find Samuel and Mary buying the property drawn by Timothy and Elizabeth Hosmer in the Ohio Company.

The Hosmer's were living in Avon, Ontario County, New York. These two places are quite close together. Their homes could have been only a few miles apart.

Scotch-Iish people were the first to move into the area and a lot of these people raised sheep for a living. Also, one must keep in mind that this was unprotected land were we to once again enter into war with Great Britian.

Many people were to leave this area before the War of 1812. Samuel, Mary Reed and family did just that. The area of Caledonia, New York, (Big Springs) is an area abounding in limestone. Many of the old limestone building are still standing. Avon, New York, is the site of a mineral springs.

LAND PURCHASE IN OHIO - 17 APR 1810
"Why Samuel and Mary Reed left we don't know for sure but we do know where their new land was and probably where they lived in between New York and Reedsville, Ohio.

The deed for the land in Ohio states the following: - - that the party of the first part, for and in consideration of the sum of $927.00 to them in hand paid by the said party of the second part - -Lot number (9)766 in Section 12 and 13(18), in Township 12 and Range 16 on the Hocking River being 100 acres of land -and Lot number 1,146 in Section 32, Township 8 and Range 11 on the waters of the West Branch of Wolf Creek, containing 160 acres of land according to the survey thereof in the Office of Survey at Marietta, Ohio. This deed is dated 17 Apr 1810.
"

LAND PURCHASE IN OHIO - 30 JUN 1812
"Now on the 30 Jun 1812 we find Samuel and Mary Reed again buying land. This time it is Lot 105 in Section 2, Township 4, Range 11. Again it is 100 acres. It was purchased from Enos and Eleanor Warner of Unadilla, County of Otsego, State of New York. This land is located at what is now Reedsville, Meigs, Ohio."

LAND SOLD IN OHIO - 28 NOV 1812
"On the 28 Nov 1812 Samuel and Mary Reed of Troy Twp. Athens County, Ohio, sell their land on the Hockhocking River. However, on this deed there is no mention of his
selling the 160 acres on the West Branch of Wolf Creek. One should take note that Samuel and Mary Reed were apparently recognized as being from Troy Township, Athens County in 1813. Remember that Caleb Barstow (their children would marry) was from Rome Township, Athens County in 1813."

LAND SOLD IN OHIO - 15 SEP 1813
"On the 15 Sept 1813 Samuel Reed sells a small strip of land from Lot 105 in Reedsville, Athens, Ohio, to Wm. Euffington. This is the last that I could find where Samuel Reed sold any land. Therefore, it is very likely that he did die in Jan of 1815."

OTHER SAMUEL REED RECORDS

Per the 1790, 1800, and 1810 U.S. Census, a Samuel Reed (born around 1766) lived in Abington, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. This Samuel Reed died in 1853 in Massachusetts.

This Samuel Reed's children were born in Washington County, New York between 1789 and 1801 and land purchases were made by Samuel in New York during that time period.

Because of the distance between the Massachusetts location and the New York location, the Samuel Reed in Massachusetts is most likely a different person than the one that settled in Meigs County, Ohio.

However, there were other REED families that settled in Meigs County from Massachusetts. Per The Pioneer History of Meigs County, By Stillman Carter Larkin, Columbus, Ohio, The Berlin Printing Company, 1908, page 138:

"Whittemore Reed was brought from New Hampshire in 1798, a child, to Orange township, by his mother."

Major Reed (1789-1879)
Harriett Reed Collins (1791- ? )
Samuel Reed (1795-1890)

Matilda Reed (1798-1891)
