Edward B. Smith age 82, passed away at his home in Missouri City, Texas on Sunday, February 7, 2016. He was born on August 16, 1933 in Longview, Texas to Burton H. and Mable (Mathews) Smith. Ed had many passions in life, but music was always at the center. He was a 1955 graduate of Baylor University with a Bachelor of Music degree. He also received a Master of Music degree in Sacred Music from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. On August 17, 1957 he married the love of his life Marian Johanna Frederick. Ed and Marian shared a love of music and side by side they gave the gift of music to others and built a successful business. They enjoyed traveling together and spending time with friends and family. Ed’s love of music and charismatic personality gave him great success as the Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he spent 13 years growing the music program and influencing young and old alike. From 1965 to 1978 Ed directed multiple choirs including, adult, youth, and children’s choirs. He was a pioneer of contemporary Christian choral music, starting the “One Way” youth choir that performed not only for the local church, but also toured and performed at other churches, and recorded multiple albums. In 1978, Ed combined his love of music with his passion for recording when he opened his own recording studio Creative Sound Productions. After moving to Houston, Texas in 1983, the company expanded into cassette manufacturing, audio and video duplication, and cd replication. Ed retired after 29 years in 2007. His many interests and hobbies included camping, fishing, and especially playing golf. He was also a licensed Ham Radio operator, making friends all over the world. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marian Smith, his daughters Michele Busse and Cheryl Bagby, his son Brian Smith, nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two nephews, and countless others whose lives he touched along the way. A private celebration of life was shared by family members on February 19, 2016. The family requests donations be made in Ed’s name to The First Tee of Greater Houston at www.thefirstteegreaterhouston.org.
