She and her twin brother Elijah are 10 years old in the 1870 census household of their parents, James M. & Clementine (HARPER) ALLEN in Columbus, Georgia.

She is evidently Ella (ALLEN) HERRING, first wife of Zachariah Bennett HERRING, Jr. Possibly the "Zacheus" HERRING and Tip or Tiss ALLEN who married 04 MAY 1879 in Muscogee County, Georgia (not certain). Zachariah married second on 13 NOV 1898 in Muscogee County, Georgia, to Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" (SWEATT) REID.

Mary Jane Galer's list of persons interred in the New Cemetery area of Linwood shows: Mrs. Ella HERRING, female, died aged 39 years of paralysis; buried 27 JUN 1898 in Section C, Lot 882 - Sexton Jesse Alexander BEARD. [Galer's source was the sexton's card file (an index). The original burial record in the sexton's ledger book shows this person was born in Columbus, Georgia, and died at her residence on Wynn Hill (which was evidently not yet within the city limits of Columbus at that time).

Daniel Olds' index of deaths, AUG 1890 to DEC 1918, from the Muscogee County Death Register, on file with the Muscogee County Health Department's Office of Vital Records, shows: Ella HERRING, White female, died 26 JUN 1898, aged [under] 40. [Age in this source tends to be more of a category (like Under 40) than exact. Also, despite appearances, this database does not establish that someone died in Muscogee County. Analysis indicates that the database includes information on persons who were buried at one of the Columbus municipal cemeteries, whether they died in Muscogee County or elsewhere, and usually excludes persons who died in Muscogee County but were buried at a site other than one of the Columbus municipal cemeteries.]

This grave is probably not identifiably marked. Others reported to be in Section C, Lot 882, have surnames / maiden names ALLEN, CLAIBORNE, DEVORE, GILMORE, and YOUNG, most of whom have marked graves in Dolores Autry's Section J, Lot 233 - see her "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book, Volume 3. Also reported in C-882 but apparently unmarked is Zachariah Bennett HERRING, Jr. (buried 21 MAR 1930, aged 75 years).
