Thomas Nathaniel Ackerson, age 79 of New Ulm, died on Tuesday, February 7, at his home. A visitation will be held at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, SOUTH CHAPEL, Sunday, February 12, beginning at 1:00. A remembrance of Tom by Richard Meyer will be given at 2:00 with a reception following at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later time.
Tom was born on July 30, 1937, in New Ulm to Ted and Luella (Olson) Ackerson. He attended schools all across the United States due to his father’s naval service. When the family moved back to New Ulm, he enrolled in the local public high school but left to enlist in the Navy at 17 where he served from 1955 to 1961.He traveled to Japan, Australia, the Arctic, the Mediterranean, Greece, Spain and Puerto Rico.
Tom graduated from Mankato State College in 1966 and began his teaching career in Madelia where he taught English until he retired in 1991. He also owned and operated the Goosetown Ltd. bar where he was the official “King of Goosetown.”
On June 3, 1962, he married Carol Meeg-Andersen, a local English teacher, and they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this year.
Tom was a bowler and longtime member of the All Star League and a member of the Bowling Hall of Fame. He began golfing in his 30s and devoted every day of his summer break to golfing at the New Ulm Country Club where he won various tournaments and prizes. His other interests were pool, chess, playing cards, horse racing and the theatre. He was a member of Turner Hall for many years and also belonged to the American Legion, the Madelia Teachers Association, the Minnesota Education Association and was a lifetime member of the National Education Association.
Special memories of Tom include his talent at memorizing poetry and reciting it to anyone who would listen, calling on Odin to bring rain to water the golf course, cursing the fact his lawn kept growing, and believing the Ice Age was returning when he needed to blow snow after a blizzard.
Tom is survived by his wife Carol Faye, her sister Iris and husband Harvey, their daughters Debbie, Brenda, Jill and Amy, his brother Rodney and wife Elena, and their children Christina and Gregory. He was preceded in death by his brother Myron and his parents Nathaniel (Ted) and Luella Ackerson.
