Arthur, Art as he was usually called was the youngest child born of nine children to Thomas and Selina Maddox Watterson. Art's parents were born in England on the Isle of Man and came to the United States about 1880. They settled in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. Thomas was a stone mason as was his father before him. Art took up the trade as well.
In 1917 he married Martha Ethel Sebree and they had only one child, a son, Robert E. Watterson.
