Fred Varney Pauley was the son of Joseph C. "Joe" and Martha Varney Pauley. His siblings were Edna May, William Charles, Joseph Edward, James Madison, Robert, Frank Andrew, and Jack Hermon. He married Nannie Allred. They had a daughter, Ann.
Fred entered the Marine Corps on December 28, 1941, and received training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He was transferred to Cuba and to the South Pacific for eighteen months. He saw action on Guadalcanal Island, New Georgia, and Tarawa Islands. He was one of five brothers who served in the military during World War II. He was a former employee of the Pond Creek Colliery Company.
