Sally Runk Badger, 74, of Raleigh and Henderson, departed this life on March 10, 2014.

She was born in Ontario, Canada, grew up in Webster Groves, Miss., graduated from Beverly Hills High in Los Angeles and received her BA from Purdue University.

Her mother, Katherine Runk Hartford, and father, James Scott Runk, preceded her in death.

Sally always said she had lived a very interesting and full life. Over the years she was a stewardess with Pan American Airways, flying to Europe, the Middle and Far East, and later becoming the marketing manager for Pan Am when it flew out of RDU. She was an instructor at the IBM Education Center in St. Louis, Mo., and a teacher in Ladue, Mo., Concord, Mass., in Kinston and at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, where she taught world history, English, civics and Middle Eastern, African and early American history.

She helped develop a library for the Lucy Daniels Center’s Enrichment and Early Intervention Programs, was instrumental in developing a children’s intake program in the old Rex Hospital and helped reintroduce the opera in the schools program in Wake County.

At the Encore Lifelong Learning Center at N.C. State, she developed and taught three multimedia courses and moderated one foreign policy course. These included a survey course of the Middle East (in response to 911), Art Theft in Wartime (in response to the Iraqi Art Museum thefts), Great Decisions (exploring unilateralism / multilateralism), and Uppity Women in History.

A lifelong learner, Sally, at age 65, started work on a master’s program to develop online courses.

Sally enjoyed serving whatever community in which she found herself. At Purdue, she was elected president of her freshman dorm, was chosen homecoming queen in her sophomore year, was president of KKG sorority, elected as student body secretary, was a member of Purduettes (Purdue Musical Organizations) and the Kappa Keynotes (barbershop quartet), all of which culminated in election to Mortar Board Senior Honorary (for scholarship, leadership and service).

In Raleigh she served as a docent at the N.C. Museum of Art when it was still located downtown and was commissioned a Stephen Ministry Leader at White Memorial Presbyterian Church.

For many years she was a dedicated member of Bible Study Fellowship and the Saltshakers (a Bible study group).

Over the years she served on the boards of the Junior League of Raleigh, the English Speaking Union, the Triangle Pastoral Counseling Center, the Encore Advisory Board of N.C. State, the Capital Area Cultural Center and the national Board of COSCA (Council of Scottish Clans & Associations).

In Henderson she served as an advisor to the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central N.C. and trustee of the Perry Memorial Library until ALS made it impractical.

Most of all she lived for and loved her family, of which she was very proud.

Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh on Saturday, March 15, at 9:30 a.m.

A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to White Memorial Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church of Henderson, ALS Association, or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on St. Mary’s Street in Raleigh.
