LeRoy Wiliiam Hunsaker June 30, 1929 - February 15, 2017 San Diego

Dr. LeRoy Hunsaker passed away peacefully at home on February 15th, 2017 due to prostate cancer.

LeRoy was born June 30, 1929 to Lloyd and Emma Hunsaker in the town of Terra Bella, California.

He grew up on the family farm which was homesteaded when his great-grandfather drove the family out from Texas at the age of twelve. He attended Porterville High School where he lettered in football, baseball and track. His 4 x 100 yard relay team held the school record for 20 years.

He graduated in 1947 and married his high school sweetheart Peggy Jean Smith in 1948.

He then opened a furniture store called LeRoy's Maple shop. LeRoy and Peggy shared a passion for flying and both were pilots until the late 1970's. He still loved baseball and played in the minor leagues for the Chicago Cubs until he decided, with all of its travel requirements, would not be good for his family. So, at the age of 29 he decided to pursue a medical career. He graduated from UCSF Medical School in 1965. By this time, he and Peggy had a thirteen year old son, Tristan Lee (deceased in 1994), had lost a daughter at birth (Dannon), and Peggy had just given birth to their daughter, Tara Lynn.

LeRoy moved his family to San Diego to do his residency at San Diego County General Hospital, where he was resident of the year in 1966. After completing his residency in orthopedics, he became a founder of Alvarado Orthopedic Medical Group, where he practiced throughout his career. He served on the Alvarado Hospital Board of Directors for more than ten years; many years serving as chairman.

He was also on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Blood Bank for many years, along with several other medical boards throughout his career. This was because he was well-respected as an orthopedic surgeon and a businessman. He was fair, level-headed, and calm during meetings. He loved practicing medicine because of the interactions he had with his patients, and the feelings were mutual. He was well-known for his kind, pleasant, and jovial demeanor. The nurses on staff called him the "The Teddy Bear."

LeRoy was an avid golfer and was a member of both the San Diego Country Club and PGA West in La Quinta, where he and Peggy had a condominium and traveled frequently. Lamenting the fact that he had to sacrifice his interactions with his patients and colleagues, LeRoy decided to retire from medical practice in 1998, to spend more time with his family and play golf.

When his beloved Peggy became ill in 2008, he, along with his daughter Tara, was by her side every step of the way. His family greatly enjoyed spending time with him, as he had an uncommon gift for talking through not only "dire" situations, but also giving comfort in everyday life. Indeed, he was the eye of any hurricane. His love and guidance will be deeply missed.

LeRoy is survived by his daughter, Tara Sjoberg, her husband Eric and their son Tyler, his brother Jim, and his grandsons, Dustin and Jayson Hunsaker. Memorial service to be held at El Camino Memorial, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego, CA on March 11th at 2PM.
