BURWELL — Rollin Struckman, 90, of Burwell passed away Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at the Community Memorial Health Center at Burwell.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ord United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Stefanie Hayes officiating. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Ord VFW Post 7029 and the Burwell American Legion Post 298. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rollin Ross Struckman was born in Ord to Henry John and May Elizabeth (Rogers) Struckman on April 15, 1926. Rollin grew up on the family farm east of Burwell where he lived and worked his entire life.

As a boy, he attended the District Rural School and graduated from Ord High School in 1944. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II where he served as a medic and saw active duty in the Philippines and Japan after the bomb. He served in the 34th regiment of the 24th Infantry Division from Sept. 28, 1944, to Nov. 26, 1946, for two years and two months. He received many medals for his service, with the Distinguished Service Medal being one of his special honors.

After leaving the service, he worked in Kansas City before returning to the family farm to help his mother and brother. It was at this time he met the love of his life, who was a country school teacher, Mary Ann Jablonski. They were married on Aug. 22, 1953, in Ord. The couple made their home on the family farm and began the hard life of a rancher. For 63 years they lived the life of corn, hay and cattle. Calving season was a special time for Rollin that he loved and passed on to his sons, Brad and Craig. His work ethic never allowed him to retire and he was often seen out driving his old pickup and daily checking on everything until recent health problems slowed him down. A strong belief in hard work and a love for the land was also instilled in his sons.

Rollin’s special joys were his three granddaughters and extended family and friends that he enjoyed spending time with. He was an avid reader and liked to fish. Supporting his sons and granddaughters in all the activities was also very important to him. He found time to support many organizations. He was a lifetime member of Ord VFW Post 7029, Burwell American Legion Post 298, the Elks, a 4-H leader, was on the FHA board and ASCS committee and a rural fire volunteer. He was a member of the Ord Methodist Church.

Rollin is survived by his wife, Mary Ann of Burwell; one son, Craig, of Ord; three granddaughters, Amanda of Omaha and Abby and Annie of Ord; a brother, Keith (Paula) Struckman of Grand Junction, Colo.; two sisters, Virginia (Paul) Stoddard of Larkspur, Colo., and Carol White of Arcadia, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Debbie Struckman of Sheridan, Wyo.; sister-in-law Phyllis (Ron) Romans of Yutan; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Rollin was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bradley Ross; an infant granddaughter, Kailey Ann; and two nephews, Michael Stoddard and Jeffery Romans.
