Born to Joseph and Madeline Carcione on May 22, 1939 in San Francisco, she attended St. Anne of the Sunset grammar school, graduating in 1953. Barbara graduated from St. Rose High School in 1957 and matriculated to Dominican University in San Rafael, graduating in 1961 with a degree in Education and a minor in music. She dedicated her life to children both as a teacher, a mentor and a friend. At Christmas time she led the neighborhood in block caroling, and during the summers she loaded up the station wagon and brought kids to the beach, a swimming pool, or a park. She spent many years with the Jefferson Elementary School district, the last 22 at Thomas Edison School in Daly City before retiring in 2002.
Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Charlie; devoted children Nancy (Steve) Claussen of Portland, Michael (Lisa) of San Bruno, Katherine of San Mateo, and Stephen of San Francisco as well as her grandchildren Melissa Erle, Julia (Mike) Dougherty, Gina Erle, Ellen Claussen and Matthew Claussen and her adorable great-grandson, Nathan Dougherty. Other survivors are her brothers Peter (Gail) Carcione of San Carlos and Joseph (Roberta) Carcione of Menlo Park. Also her brother-in-law Paul (Sandra) Erle of San Ramon, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews and many lifelong friends.
Barbara was a very active member of Alpha Delta Kappa, (Gamma Beta Chapter) an educational Sorority, and a member of the Assistance League of San Mateo. Barbara had a great love of music and enjoyed working in her garden, traveling, and being with her family. Her generous and loving spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation and rosary on Wednesday Feb, 22, 2017 from 7:00-8:30 at Sneider, Sullivan and O'Connell's Mortuary, 977 El Camino Real San Mateo. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Bartholomew's Church, Alameda de las Pulgas and Crystal Springs Rd. San Mateo on Thursday Feb. 23 at 10:30 am, In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dominican University, 50 Acacia Ave. San Rafael, CA, 94901 or, St. Mary's College High School Chapel Fund, 1294 Albina Ave. Berkeley, CA 94706.
