At 03.37 hours on 14 November, U-561 fired three torpedoes at the unescorted steamer, causing it to stop after two hits and then to quickly sink. Although no survivors or lifeboats were sighted by the German submarine, it was later reported that one member of S. S. Crusader's crew, a Brazilian coal passer from Rio de Janeiro, was the lone survivor of Crusader; he was held POW at Milag Nord in Germany and was released in 1945.
NOTE: Fireman Carrière was accepted for commemoration as war dead on 25th February 2017, his name to be added to the Halifax Memorial.
