His first wife was Ann Elizabeth Merritt, dau. of Thomas Merritt and Jane Waller. John and Ann Elizabeth were married 18 Dec 1834 in Morgan Co., OH. Elizabeth died 1 Feb. 1858 and her burial site is unknown at this time.

He married Miss Rebecca Barnhart, dau. of Nicholas Barnhart, between Feb., 1858 and July, 1860.

Obit:
Died, July 26th, Mr. John Coen. He leaves a wife and daughter to mourn his loss. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Smith after which the remains were interred in the South Olive cemetery Tuesday. ***Caldwell Journal 29 JUL 1897. (The surviving daughter would be Delora (Franks) Coen Barnhart, whom he and Rebecca adopted sometime before the 1860 census.)
