Funeral services for Melba Whatley Vining Potter of Monroe, LA will be 2PM, Thursday, March 9, 2017, at Cox Funeral Home with Bro. Ron Thomas officiating. Services are under the direction of Cox Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday from 1PM until time of service at Cox Funeral Home.
Mrs. Melba Whatley Vining Potter went home to be with the Lord on March 7th, 2017. She was 92.
Melba was born May 1, 1924 in Pioneer, La., to the late Enoch and Ciara LaCroix Whatley. In addition to being a homemaker and raising her kids and grandchildren, she was a beautician for many years.
She was a member of Swartz Baptist Church.
Melba was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. An esteemed matriarch, she was very proud of her family. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends and traveling to blue grass festivals with her twin sister Mable.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, George Vining, second husband, Kenneth Potter; four brothers, Wade Whatley, Maurice Whatley, Mason Whatley and Joe Whatley; and five sisters, Velma Fleming, Lessie Crosby, Loread Rush, Opal Kipe and her twin Mable Thompson.
She is survived by her daughter Charlotte Vining of Monroe; three sons, Odell Vining and wife Mary Ann of Minden, La., Gary Vining and wife Martha of Haughton, La., and Kendall Vining and wife Beverly of Doyline, La.; six grandchildren Tim, Odell Jr., Holly Ann, Heath, Mark and Scott and their spouses as well as a host of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Interment will follow in New Forest Cemetery near Forest, LA, where she will be laid to rest beside her late husband, George Vining.
