American Professional Wrestler. Bass began his career in 1975 for the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), wrestling primarily in Championship Wrestling in Florida and other territories throughout the Southeastern United States. He frequently teamed with Black Bart as The Long Riders. In 1987, Bass rose to national fame in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). With his dreaded bullwhip, he battled against classic fan favorites like Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake, Blackjack Mulligan and Junkyard Dog. His biggest high-profile angle came prior to the first Summerslam in 1988 where Beefcake’s face was ripped open by the spur of Bass’ boot. The footage was deemed too graphic for World Wrestling Federation (WWF) to air. Beefcake would exact his final revenge by beating Bass on the January 7, 1989 episode of Saturday Night’s Main Event. After appearing in the Royal Rumble match later in the month, Bass was a preliminary wrestler until leaving the company later in the year. Following his retirement in 1991 due to the many injuries he had in his career, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Arkansas State University and became a successful construction equipment salesman. Bass, whose last notable wrestling appearance came for the first ever WrestleReunion in 2005, died after complications brought on by a burst appendix.
